"Even if you have never meditated before just follow
these steps and you will find the process to be simple and
easy." --Tulshi Sen
"In this section you will be given the application of the
components of meditation and the four steps of the process
of meditating on the Proclamations. Even if you have never
meditated before just follow these four
steps and you will find the process to be simple and easy.
The First
Step for Meditation
Posture
The first step in any meditation is posture. That is how you
position yourself, physically, emotionally, and spiritually.
Sit in a comfortable position, where you will have minimum
awareness of your body. The Lotus
position, for those of you who know it, is as good as
sitting on a straight back chair.
If you are sitting on a chair, sit straight and place your
feet flat on the floor. Rest your hands on your lap in a
relaxed position. Hold your head upright and straight on
your shoulders. You must feel comfortable. Do not strain
yourself in any way. If you feel any kind of strain, make an
adjustment to feel comfortable.
The object of the exercise is to be comfortable and
allow a free flow of
energy through your body. This is Asana, the first component
of meditation.
Closing your eyelids, turn your eyes slightly upwards and
concentrate between your eyebrows. This point between your
eyebrows should be your point of focus and concentration on
the physical level.
Take four deep breaths. Breathe in through your nostrils and
take notice of when the incoming breath stops for a moment,
before the out breathing begins. Breathe out through your
nostrils. Take notice of the pause that occurs when the out
breathing ends and the in breathing begins, and then again
when the in breathing ends and the out breathing begins. Do
not hold the breath artificially, at all. It must be
natural. The pauses will increase, the more you practice
this meditation.
Continue to breathe through your nostrils. Do not breathe in
or out through your mouth during the meditation. Keep your
mouth closed in a relaxed way throughout.
You must allocate a certain amount of time for each period
of meditation, ten minutes or fifteen minutes or even five
minutes. These periods will increase as your practice
continues and your comfort level and the urge to experience
the bliss increases.
Discipline is necessary for success. In the beginning
set a time no less than five minutes in the morning after
you get ready to start the day. Allow the same period in the
evening before you retire for the night. At midday set aside
another time slot to meditate if you can find a quiet place.
Now you are ready to start the meditation on the
Proclamations. To
review, the Four Proclamations are:
The First Proclamation: Consciousness Is the Creator
Pragyanaam Brahman
The Second Proclamation: That Thou Art
Tat Tavm Asi
The Third Proclamation: My Consciousness Is the Creator
Ayam Atman Brahman
The Fourth Proclamation: I Am the Creator
Aham Brahmasmi
Meditate on one Proclamation at a time in its order
from the First to the Fourth. Allocate one week for each of
the Proclamations. Don’t rush and go to the Fourth before
you have meditated on the other three. You will feel the
changes even after the first day of your meditation on the
First Proclamation....
